A Prairie Home Apocalypse or: What the Dog Saw
The gun-thing smelled like strange smoke, and the dog sniffed the air and wuffed at it, but it did not do anything so the dog stepped in a little closer. He put his paws on the person's lap, and licked her face, and her face tasted wet and salty. Then she reached up with one hand and ran it over the dogs head and said that he was a Good Boy, so the dog licked her face some more.
But then the dog smelled more of the dead-things, and he jumped back and barked, and the girl got up with the gun-thing in her hand and looked toward the gate. The dog barked again, because the smell was getting closer, and the girl held the gun-thing up to her shoulder and pointed it at the gate. Then one of the dead-things came through with a moaning growl, and the dog barked at it to go away.
Suddenly, the gun-thing made a loud noise, and the dead-thing fell down on the ground. The dog barked and barked at the dead-thing, but it did not move again.
The girl made a shushing noise at the dog, and the dog growled a little more at the dead-thing, and then ran over to where she was standing.
She said some words and one of them sounded like "inside" and the dog wanted to go inside so he jumped up and put his paws on the girl and then ran toward the gate.
The girl yelled at him, but the dog was too excited to get inside. Only the girl did not come to the gate with the dog, so the dog went back to see what she was doing. The girl told the dog to stay and then shut the gate and propped the heavy trash can up against the inside of it.
The dog barked again, because he wanted to go inside, but the girl shushed him. She went over to the back of the house where the windows were and hit at one of them with the gun-thing, and the glass went all out of the window and into the kitchen. She used the gun-thing to clear the glass out from the outside of the window, and then she leaned the gun thing against the side of the house, and reached down and picked the dog up. She put him through the window and into the kitchen, throwing him in over the glass on the floor. Then the dog watched as she climbed in the window after him.
When she was in, she took everything off the table, and leaned the table up against where the broken window was, and then she went into the living room and dragged the couch into the kitchen and pushed it up against the table.
The dog did not understand what was happening, but he was very glad to be inside, and when the girl moved the couch he got very excited and ran up and down the hall as fast as he could and then jumped up onto the couch while she was moving it. But then the dog remembered he was very thirsty, so he went to his bowl for a drink.
