A Prairie Home Apocalypse or: What the Dog Saw
The dog was glad that the dead-things were dead for good, but he could still smell their scent in the air, and he thought there must be more of them out there beyond the fence. The bodies of the dead-things the girl had stabbed with the big fork were piled up against the outside of the fence. The girl said something to herself under her breath, and then started jogging toward the front gate. The dog tried to follow after her, but the bandage on his leg made his hard for him to run very fast. By the time he got up to the gate the girl was already closing it behind her. The dog woofed at her not to leave him behind, and the girl put a finger up to her lips and made a "shhhh" sound. The dog did not understand, and woofed again, but the girl did not open the gate. Instead she set off with the big fork in her hand along the outside of the fence. The dog followed along on the inside, but the wire fence meant that he could not get to the girl to help her if she got into trouble. The girl went to the place where the dead-things had piled up against the outside of the fence. The grass beyond the fence was very tall. It reached almost up to the girl's waist. She looked around her for a moment, and then stuck the big fork into the ground. She had just grabbed the first body by the ankles and started to drag it away from the fence when when the wind shifted a little and the dog smelled another dead-thing nearby. He started barking again, but the girl kept dragging the body away from the fence into the grass. Suddenly the dog heard her scream out loud, and she began jumping up and down, and twisting around. The dog could not understand what was going on, but he could still smell the dead-thing and he thought the girl was in trouble so he kept barking and barking.
He saw her fall once, and then she was up again and running for the fence. She grabbed the big fork out of the ground and turned around. Just then the dog heard the grass rustle. The dead-thing smell was worse than ever now, and the dog saw something come crawling out of the grass toward the girl. It was a dead-thing, only its legs were gone, chopped off at the knees. Once it was out in the open the girl went over with the big fork and stabbed it in the head. The dead-thing stopped moving. The dog could hear the girl breathing in short hard gasps, but she did not stop her work. She kept dragging the dead-things away from the fence into the grass, but this time, she kept the big fork in one hand while she worked. When the last dead-thing was away from the fence the girl walked back around the outside of the fence toward the gate. The dog followed her with his nose in the air sniffing for the scent of the dead-things. The girl came back inside the fence, and rubbed the dog's ears. She was still breathing hard, but she told him he was a Good Dog.
