The girl and the bad man worked for a long time because there were so many dead-things and the bad man grunted and groaned as he tried to move the bodies. It was almost all the way dark now, but the dog smelled another dead-thing getting closer and he barked to warn the girl. The girl got ready with the big fork and when the dead-thing came out of the trees she stabbed it in the head. Finally the bad man finished moving all of the bodies and the girl and the bad man came back inside the gate. The smell of the dead-things was still strong in the air, but the girl and the bad man went away from the gate back toward the house. The bad man had a small light that hung off of his keys but it was not very good at chasing away the shadows. Then the girl pulled a strangely shaped glass thing out of the cupboard in the kitchen. She looked in all the drawers and then took out a box that rattled when she shook it. She took a stick out of the box and scraped it along the side of the box. The stick started to burn, and the smell of the burning was strong and bad. The girl took the burning stick and touched the flame to a part of the glass thing and something inside the glass thing started to burn too but the burning of the glass thing did not smell as bad as the burning of the stick. The girl blew on the stick and the burning went away. Then she twisted something on the glass thing and the burning got brighter.
The light from the burning scattered around the room and even though it was still not very bright it was better than the darkness. The girl and the bad man sat down in the chairs that sat around the table and started to talk. They talked for a very long time. The dog wanted to sleep because he was very tired but he did not trust the bad man so he stayed awake to see what he would do.
Whenever the bad man moved or shifted in his chair the dog would growl at him so that the bad man would know that the dog was watching him. The girl told the dog to stop when he growled but the dog did not stop because he did not trust the bad man. When the dog growled the bad man laughed but the dog did not like the bad man's laugh. It was not a nice laugh.
After a long time the girl and the bad man went back out into the yard. They took the light tube with them and when they shined the light tube at the fence there were four more of the dead-things lined up against the fence. The bad man took the fork and stabbed them all in the head. Then the bad man said some words to the girl and the girl said some words back and then the girl left the bad man outside with the light tube and she went back toward the house. The dog did not like the bad man and he wanted to stay and see what he would do but he did not want to leave the girl alone so he followed her back toward the house.
