They left the dog alone in the cold and the rain. The dog did not like to be left alone. The dog liked it when there were people around. He barked at the people to come back, but the people got in the car and drove away.
The dog stood by the gate for a few minutes hoping that the people would come back soon, but the people did not come back so the dog went and hid under the shed where it was dry and the wind could not get him. The dog did not like the rain. The rain soaked into his fur and made him feel cold and wet, so the dog stayed under the shed for a long time until the rain stopped.
Then the dog went out from under the shed and went to his water bucket and drank big slurping gulps of water with his tongue. Then he went to the gate to see if the people had come back yet, but the people had not come back.
The dog went and found a stick lying in the yard, and he grabbed the stick with his mouth and dragged it around the yard for a while. But it was no fun without someone to throw the stick.
Then the dog heard the sound of someone yelling. It was coming from somewhere on the outside of the fence, so the dog went to see what the yelling was. He got up close to the fence, but he could not see between the boards in the fence. He could still hear the yelling though, and he smelled something too, something different, something...dead.
The dog did not like the dead smell. He had once found a squirrel that had died in the yard, and he had liked that smell, but this was a different kind of dead smell. The dog could tell the dead smell was bad. And there was a sound, almost like growling, but different too, and the dog, bared his teeth and growled back at the sound.
The yelling got much louder, and then it stopped all at once. But the growling sound was still there, and the dog could smell something new, and it smelled like blood.
There was other yelling now too, and the dog wondered why there was so much yelling. The dog did not like the dead smell, and he did not understand the yelling and he started to be afraid. But he stayed by the fence, because he thought maybe the yelling meant the people would come back soon and let him come inside, and the dog so desperately wanted to be inside.
Now there were loud banging sounds like the dog had never heard before and then more yelling and more banging sounds, and then the growling stopped.
The dog heard people talking outside the fence, but the people were not his people so he barked at them to go away.
