The dog stayed under the shed and waited for the two dead-things to go away, but they did not go away. They kept trying to reach the dog, and the dog curled up as far back as he could, and whimpered to himself in the dark.
Night came, and still the dead-things did not go away. The dog thought that his people were bound to be home soon, but his people did not come home, and he was trapped under the shed by the dead-things.
In the night the dog heard more yelling sounds and groaning sounds from outside the fence, and there were bangs and wailing sirens going past in the road. The dog wanted to bark at the sirens, but he was too tired. He smelled smoke coming from somewhere, and his nose twitched a little, but he did not know what the smell meant, so he curled up and went to sleep.
When morning came, the dead-things were still in the yard trying to get at the dog under the shed. The dog barked at them to go away, but the dead-things did not go away. Then there were more dead-things in the yard, and they were all trying to get at the dog under the shed. One of the dead-things was very small, like a child, and she climbed part of the way under the shed where the dog was, only she wasn't small enough and she got stuck. The dog could smell her, and she was so close, and she smelled bad-dead, but she could not reach the dog.
The dog started to be thirsty because the dead things were outside and he could not get to his water bucket. He was hungry too, but he was more thirsty than he was hungry.
The little dead-thing that had gotten stuck was still trying to get to the dog, and the dog had to stay back as far as he could go to get away from her.
Then the dog smelled something else, and it smelled like a person in his yard. Then the dog heard some of the dead-things leave from around the shed, and there was a loud banging sound, and then again and again and again. The dog was afraid of the loud sounds, but he was glad that the dead-things were gone. Then he heard footsteps coming closer, and he saw a face looking down under the shed, and the little dead-thing must have heard the noise too, because she tried to turn around and get the new person, but there was a loud banging sound again very close, and the dog felt something cold splatter across his nose, and it smelled like the dead-things and the little dead-thing stopped moving.
For a long time the dog did not move, but he could smell the person still out in his yard, and so, when he was sure the little dead-thing would not move again, the dog crawled out of his hiding place to see the person. The person was sitting up against the fence with something long and dark and metal in her hand.
