A Prairie Home Apocalypse or: What the Dog Saw
But the farther they ran, the more dead-things there were. They came from everywhere, and they came after the dog and the girl in a big pack. The dog ran and ran and ran, but he started to get tired, and when he looked behind him he could see the girl was getting tired too. She was barely running anymore, just limping along behind the dog, and the dog thought that the dead-things would get her if she didn't run faster. He barked at her to hurry, but she wouldn't go any faster. Then the dog spotted a car parked by the side of the road, and the door was open, and the dog thought that the girl could take him for a ride and they would be away from the dead-things. The dog liked to go on rides, so he barked again and ran to the car and jumped in the open door. The girl called out something to the dog, and at first the dog thought she was going to run past the car, but at the last second she turned and ran to the car. She threw her bag and the gun-thing into the car so that they almost hit the dog, and then she got in and slammed the door behind her.
The dog barked at her, but at first she did not start the car. The dog could see the dead-things getting closer, and he wanted to be away from them, so he barked and barked again. The girl was looking around the car for something, and the she picked up a set of keys from the floor and tried to use them to start the car, but something was wrong, and the dead-things were getting closer. The dog barked and barked, and then he heard the engine start and he jumped up to the window to see where they would go. But at first the girl did not go forward. She fumbled with the lever between the seats for a while before the car finally lurched forward with a roar.
The girl was leaning forward to see over the steering wheel and the car was swerving and lurching all over the place, and the dog fell over because the car was lurching so much, but he was excited, because he was going for a ride, and also because the dead-things would not be able to catch him in the car.
The car swerved again, and went up off the road and onto the grass, and the girl turned the wheel hard. Then there was a loud sound, and the car lurched to a stop. The dog fell forward onto the floor, and there was a strange smell in the car, and when the dog looked up he saw two big white things coming out of the dashboard, and something that looked like smoke, but did not smell like smoke. Then the white things started to wilt, and the one over the dog came down over his head, and the dog shook it off and climbed back up into the seat.
He could see where the front of the car had run into a big wood pole, and the girl was crying again, so the dog licked the tears off her face.
