A Prairie Home Apocalypse or: What the Dog Saw
The dead-things were getting closer again, and the dog nudged the girl with his nose so that she would make the car go away from the dead things. The girl kept crying, but she pushed on the lever and made the car back up from the wooden pole and then went forward around it. This time she went slower and did not swerve around so much, so the dog was able to stay in the seat. But there was something coming out of the front of the car that made it hard to see, and the car was making a strange noise that the dog did not like.
The dog wished the girl would roll down the window so he could put his head out and smell the smells, but the girl did not roll the window down, so the dog jumped into the back of the car and put his paws up on the back seat and looked behind them. He could still see the pack of dead-things, but they were far away now, and they moved so slowly that the dog thought the dead-things would not be able to catch him now.
A little later the dog could not see the dead-things at all anymore, but the car was still making a funny noise. The dog jumped back up into the front to see where they were going, but the smoke was still coming out of the front of the car, and the car was slowing down. The girl banged on the steering wheel with her hand, but that did not make the car go any faster. The dog barked, and barked, but that did not make the car go any faster either.
Then the car made one more loud noise, and stopped. At first the girl didn't do anything. She just sat there in the car looking at the road. Then she reached over and scratched the dog on the ears and the dog tried to lick her face again but the girl would not let him. She made a laughing sound that made the dog feel happy, and he let his tongue hang out one side of his mouth.
But then the girl screamed, and the dog heard something breaking, and he turned to see one of the dead-things reaching in the window for him. The girl grabbed her bag from the seat, and opened the door, but the dead-thing had the dog by the leg, and the barked and snarled at the dead-thing, but the dead-thing would not let go of his leg. Then the girl was next to the dead-thing hitting it with the bag over and over, and the dead-thing let go of the dog and tried to grab the girl. The girl jumped back but the dead-thing followed after her, so the dog jumped out of the car and grabbed the dead-thing by the ankle and held on. The dog did not like the way the dead-thing tasted, but he did not let go because he knew the dead-thing wanted to get the girl. The dead-thing fell down on the ground because the dog was holding it's ankle and then the girl saw that the dead-thing wasn't chasing her anymore, so she came back to where the dead-thing was, and brought her foot hard down on it's head.
