The girl kept yelling, but the dog did not move. Then the girl came closer the where the dog was standing, and she tried to shoo the other dog away, but the other dog did not move. The girl took one step closer, and the other dog snarled and jumped at her. The dog jumped in front of the other dog, and bit him as hard as he could. The other dog, yelped in pain, and then turned and attacked the dog with snapping jaws. The girl tried to help the dog, but the other dog moved too fast and when the girl tried to hit it with her bag, the other dog just fought harder.
The dog fought as hard as he could, but the other dog was bigger, and the dog was hurt in his back leg and on his ear. But then, just when the other dog was about to bite down hard on the dog's throat it froze and pricked up his ears. For a long moment nothing happened. Then the dog caught a faint whiff of a familiar smell. The bad-dead smell. The other dog jumped up and ran away. The dog tried to get up too, but his back leg hurt him and he could barely stand.
The girl knelt down by the dog running her hand over his head, and softly touching the places where he had been bitten. The dog whimpered in pain, but he could smell the dead-thing getting closer, and he knew he had to get up, so he forced himself to try to stand. He was able to balance himself on three legs, and he trotted forward as quickly as he could. The girl called after him as he hobbled away, but the dog barked at her to hurry up, because he knew the dead-thing would be here soon. At first the girl did not seem to understand, so the dog barked again. Then the girl looked over her shoulder and got to her feet. She hurried over to where the dog was standing and the dog hobbled on in front of her.
The place in his leg where he had been bitten hurt more than anything the dog had ever felt in his life. He just wanted to curl up and lie still so that his leg would not hurt so much, but he knew the dead-thing was on its way, and if he did not keep going, the dog knew the dead-thing would get him. The dead-thing was moving slow, but the dog was moving slow too, so he was not able to get away from the dead-thing. The girl walked alongside the dog, and the dog was glad that she did not leave him. He did not want to be alone with the dead-thing after him. The dog and the girl walked for a very long time, and the pain in his leg got even worse. The sky started to get dark, and the dog wanted to stop, but he could still smell the dead-thing following them, and he could still hear it's moaning. By now the girl was walking slower, and the dog knew the dead-thing was not walking slower. If they did not find a place to hide from the dead-thing it would catch up with them soon. The dog wished there were some place to hide, but the road they were on was empty and dark.
