The inside of the house smelled old. The dog smelled wood, and he smelled tobacco and he smelled old leather. And he smelled a dead-thing. The dog thought the girl must have smelled the dead-thing too, because she went into the house very slowly with the crowbar out in front of her. She called out into the house, but no one answered her words. She called again, and this time there was shuffling sound and then a thump from somewhere back in the house. The girl started back toward the sound and the dog followed close behind her. As they got further back into the house, the smell of the dead-thing got stronger. Then they came to a door, and the door was shut, but the dead-thing smell was worse here than ever so the dog thought that the dead-thing must be behind the door.
The dog looked up at the girl. He thought she would open the door and hit the dead-thing on the head with the crowbar, but instead she leaned one arm against the door and started to cry. The dog could hear the dead-thing thumping against the door, but the girl was still crying, and the dog did not know what to do. He barked at the girl, because he was afraid of the dead-thing behind the door, and he wanted her to hit it with the crowbar and stop it from moaning and thumping around, but the girl did not open the door. Instead she turned away, and walked back into the main part of the house.
The dog stayed by the door for a moment to see if the dead-thing would come after them through the door, but the door was heavy and strong, and though the dead-thing thumped and thrashed against the door, it did not get out. The dog followed the girl into the big room in the middle of the house and found her sitting on the couch and crying. She was looking at something in her hands. The dog jumped up on the couch and looked at the thing the girl was looking at. The dog recognized the thing, because it was like a thing he had knocked off the table one time, and it broke and he had gotten a spanking. It was a square thing with a picture in it. The girl was looking at the picture and crying.
The dog lay down on the couch and put his head in the girl's lap so that she would know that everything would be okay. Except the dog did not know if everything would be okay, because he could still hear the dead-thing in the room thumping around and trying to get out. The girl rubbed the dogs ears for a minute. Then she put down the square thing on the table and got up off the couch. She went to a room with a lot of shelves along the walls and a big metal box in the corner. The girl went to the box and turned the knob on the front. When the door opened the dog looked inside and saw that the metal box was full of gun-things.
