In a minute the girl heard the dead-things too, and the dog heard her say something under her breath. Then she was fumbling in her pockets and putting something into the gun-thing, and the sounds of the dead-things were getting closer. The dog wanted to bark at the dead-things, but he knew they were not afraid of his barking, so he just put his head down and whimpered to himself. The girl pulled the outside door open, and the smell of the dead-things came so strong that the dog thought he might be sick. The girl backed though the garage toward the kitchen, and stood in the kitchen doorway with the gun-thing pointed at the outside door.
The dog remembered how loud the gun thing could be, so he ran and hid under the bed. Then he heard the gun-thing bang again and again and again, and then the girl yelled something, and the gun thing was silent. The dog waited for the bangs to come again, but they did not come again, but the dog could hear the girl yelling and yelling, so he crawled out from under the bed to see what was happening. The girl was standing in the door to the kitchen, hitting one of the dead-things with the back of the gun-thing over and over, until the dead-thing stopped moving. There were more of the dead-things outside the door, but the girl shut the kitchen door before they could get inside.
The girl ran through the house and grabbed the bag she had packed earlier and ran to the front door. The dog was excited because she was going to let him go outside, but the girl did not open the door right away. Instead she looked down at the dog, and then looked at the gun-thing in her hand. She pulled something out of he jacket and put it in the gun-thing. Then she pointed the barrel of the gun-thing at the dog. The dog saw that her hands were shaking, and there were tears on her face. The gun-thing smelled interesting, so the dog licked it to see what the inside tasted like, but he did not like the taste. For a little while the girl didn't do anything, but then she pulled the gun-thing up, and hung it on her shoulder with a strap, and opened the door. The dog ran outside, and the girl ran out right behind him. The dog could smell some of the dead-things crowded around the garage door, and when he ran out of the door, the dead-things saw him, and started to some after him, but the dead-things were not very fast, so the dog was able to run away from them. The girl was not as fast as the dog, but she was still faster than the dead-things. The bag kept banging against her legs, and the gun on her shoulder rattled and shook as she ran. The dog slowed down because he did not want to get too far away from the girl. Normally he would have loved to run through the neighborhood without his leash on, but now that the dead-things were here he felt better close to the girl.
