The girl took the edges of the blanket from both sides of the bed and folded them over the dead woman. Then she pulled the blanket with the body inside off of the bed. The body fell to the floor with a thunk, and the dog could see where the blanket was stained dark red close to the dead woman's head.
The girl took one end of the blanket and pulled the body across the floor, through the kitchen, and out toward the hole. She did not have to stop to rest this time, but the dog could see she was sweating hard. She pulled the body up next to the hole and pushed it the blanket down into the opening. Then she sat down again, breathing hard.
It was just then, that the dog heard the sound of a dead-thing, moaning from across the yard. The girl heard it too, and her head snapped around to see. The dead-thing was pressed up against the fence, it's face squashed against the crisscross wires, and it's mouth was open and moaning loudly. Off in the distance another dead-thing was coming their way. The girl ran back to the hole and grabbed the shovel, but the head of the shovel was too big to fit through the fence. The girl stood there and looked at the dead-things for a minute. The dog barked at them, but the dead-things were not afraid of the dog's bark, so after a while the dog stopped barking. But when he stopped barking he heard the moaning sound of more dead-things in the distance. The fence was already bowing under the weight of the the two dead-things that were pushing against it already, and the dog thought that it might fall down if more came and pushed too. The girl turned again, and this time she ran toward the house. The dog followed her down into the dark place, and this time she went to the tool pile and got a thing with a handle and big points like a giant fork and carried it back upstairs. She used the tines of the big fork to poke through the fence. She stabbed one of the dead-things right through the eye with the it, and the other one through the forehead. By this time the other dead-things were already coming close, so the girl waited by the fence and when the dead things came close enough she took the big fork and stabbed them in the heads. The dog thought he could smell more dead-things on the wind, but he could not see them or hear them.
The girl went back to the hole in the ground and knelt down with her eyes closed for a while. The dog wondered if she was okay, but when he licked her hand, she shooed him away. Then the girl opened her eyes, got up and began to shovel dirt back into the hole on top of the bodies. When she finished it was starting to get very hot and there were more dead-things coming, so the girl stood by the fence with the big fork and poked them in the head when they got close enough.
