The Austere Academy by Lemony Snicket
The three Baudelaire siblings must be the most unfortunate children in the world. After their parents died, they have been going from caretaker to caretaker, fleeing the horrid and greedy Count Olaf, who wants their fortune for himself. Violet is fourteen and is the eldest Baudelaire. She loves inventing. Klaus is twelve and he loves reading. Sunny is just a baby and she loves to bite. This time they are staying at a boarding school called Prufrock Preparatory school. Like the title says, the academy is certainly austere. It’s a horrid place to live for the Baudelaires, with a shack as their home, cruel punishments, boring teachers, a crazy Vice Principal, S.O.R.E., and of course, no matter how much security, Count Olaf and his assistants will be there in some disguise. Even through all these hard times, they make friends along the way. Friends who will work hard to help them, no matter what happens. Read this suspenseful story now!
If you don’t like sad stories, I recommend that you don’t read this book, but it is very mysterious, thrilling, and thought-provoking. It will make you want to keep reading it because it is so interesting. The poor Baudelaires are so unfortunate, the things they go through make me want to cry sometimes. I liked how the Quagmires were good friends to the Baudelaires, and that they helped them a lot. Lemony Snicket makes a lot of comments in the book, which are about what certain words and phrases mean. I think that these comments help children figure out what the words mean and it helps strengthen their vocabulary. He also makes comments about how things in the story relate to his life. This helps children learn how to relate things about books to themselves, which will strengthen their comprehension. This is a great book.
