The Vile Village by Lemony Snicket
The Baudelaires are the most unfortunate people in the world. Ever since their parents died, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire have been going from caretaker to caretaker, fleeing the notorious, greedy, and evil Count Olaf, his assistants, and a new accomplice, Esme Squalor, who all want the Baudelaire fortune. This time they are being raised by the whole village of V.F.D.. It is not a pleasant experience. They have to face hundreds of migrating crows, lots and lots of chores, and thousands of crazy and unfair rules. The Baudelaires are taken care of by Hector, the handyman, who supports them with inventions for Violet, books for Klaus, things to bite for Sunny, and Mexican dishes for all of them. The Baudelaires are also worried about their friends, the Quagmires, who are still in Count Olaf’s clutches, frightened and desperate. This book shows that no matter what, you have to keep on fighting, and it focuses on the theme of bravery and resourcefulness.
This book is extremely depressing, so beware. You may not be able to handle the unfortunate events in this book, but it is very interesting, mysterious, suspenseful, and witty, so it is a very good read. It is also educational, because Lemony Snicket makes comments about what certain words and phrases mean, and uses them throughout the book. He also makes funny comments, or comments about how the story relates to his life. He also puts himself in the background of the story in a mysterious and kind of funny way. This book is so thrilling, that you will just want to keep reading and reading until you get to the end. Sunny felt real to me, because Sunny acted just like a normal baby would. She spoke gibberish words and she liked biting things. The other characters felt real also, because I can identify with their grief, sadness, and anger about different situations. I would feel the same. I also like how the Baudelaires are very resourceful with their skills. Klaus can use useful information that he read in a book to help them with any situation. Violet can make a lot of inventions to help them escape from trouble. Sunny can bite her way out of anything. This is a great book, so read it now!
