Chapter 3
Maria had to leave when she dropped me off. The apartment was empty. I had to come home to no one. My father was off in London and only got me this apartment so I could be close to the hospital. The apartment is small but I love it. He was planning on getting me something much bigger. I didn't want it. It was bad enough to come home alone, but to have a big empty place would be worse. This one was better for me. The manager explained that I could paint the walls whatever color I wanted and he would pay me to do. He said that he wanted to paint the apartment on the top floor. My apartment wasn't on the top floor it was actually on the roof.
The owner explained that when they built it he wanted a place to take his wife. His wife always loved to watch the sun rise. She didn't like watching it from a crowded building, so the husband told the architech to build it in the corner of the roof. But about a year after I moved in he died. The son took over the apartment building, but had no use for it. He didn't want it to become useless, but he didn't want just anyone to have it. The father told me this the first time I snuck onto the roof. He was there watching the sun rise. He was so happy that I loved it. He helped me move in that same day. Maybe he felt bad for my condition, but I still like to think that he wanted me to take care of the place. My father paid him to have a huge bathroom put in last year. He didn't approve of it at first. He saw how much I loved it and agreed.
I liked the privacy sometimes and other times I was lonely. I opened the curtains in all the rooms. I opened the refrigerator but there was nothing. I put some tea on to boil and went to my room. I placed Malcolm's jacket on my bed. I took Maria's clothes off, and put them in the dirty clothes. I grabbed some pants from the drawers. I took a baggy blue shirt off the hanger and put it over me. Back in the kitchen the water started to boil. I quickly ran to take it off the stove. I opened the cabinent and grabbed a large mug. Hot steam rushed out of the cup. I dropped the tea and sugar in. I took the mug into the living room and grabbed a book off the shelf. The book was old and it cracked when it opened. It only lasted a few minutes until I sank back into the chair and fell asleep. I was being pulled back into the dark.
