much of a distance from the garage to that shop that had opened up. Her heart nearly dropped when she heard clanking behind her. Without even turning her head, she sprinted for the rusty garage.
The cool air of the conditioned workspace relaxed her but there wasn't time for that. Tavish was cleaning up something when she spotted him. "Tav! You have to get out of here! The soldiers! They're after you! They're after you!" She shouted at him as she clung to his shoulders. He looked like he didn't understand what was going on. Victoria's face was flushed and she was frantic. He grabbed her by her shoulders and held her still so that he could understand what was going on. She could see in his face that he was just about to ask a question when he saw the soldiers lining up behind her.
She moved herself to stand next to her brother and gaze upon the impossible escape. Their fate was inevitable. Tears streaked down her cheeks, taking her mascara with them. She flashed her gaze quickly to the heavy metal door in the corner and nudged Tavish on the shoulder blade.
The silence was deafening. The slight ringing in her ears followed by the slow beating of her heart counted down the seconds. Five. Four. Three. Two. One. Break.
The two of them booked it for the heavy metal door. Knowing what little time they had before the soldiers would start firing at them, they scrambled into Tavish's room and began shutting the steel door. "We have to hurry!" Victoria grunted as she pushed on the door. The soldiers seemed to have cut off all of the electricity to their garage, making the electronic door more difficult to close.
Her heart pounded in her head, making it hard to think. The two of them couldn't make the door lock without electricity, and with no elecricity, the door wouldn't run. She turned around looking for something to block the door and saw just the bed. "Tav! Get the bed, I'll hold the door!" She watched him with strained vision. The bed let out a screech as it slid across the floor on it's metal legs. What worried her more was the silence behind the door. Then there was a click. When she realized what it was, it was almost too late. She jumped over the bed and pulled her brother with her. "Tavish! Get down! Get away from the door!" She screamed as they huddled together his closet. They looked at one another in the dark, only a crack of light told them how close they were to one another.
"This is the end isn't it, Tav?" Victoria whispered.
"Don't ask me that." Tavish let out a few huffs of breath.
"This is it, Tavish. We're done for," She whispered. The light illuminated one of her green eyes and all it showed was fear. It was only a second before an explosion destroyed the door. Pieces of shrapnel flew through the walls and into the closet hitting Victoria in the shoulder and chest. She felt like something had punched her hard on the right side of her chest. Her hand shaking, she placed her hand over a rather warm and sticky spot on her blouse.
