The Rebellion
Her head pounded as her brain screamed for oxygen, and the organs that should be providing that, weren't.
Things moved so fast that Victoria didn't even know she was lying on the cobblestone streets of the market. She reached out her hands and grabbed a hold of Owain's sleeves. She pulled and lifted herself off of the stones to try and speak to him. How could she speak with no air? She let go of his sleeves and hit the ground with a loud "Thump" that echoed in her head. She felt the world begin to spin as people gathered around. They were confused, and many of them were weaving in and out through the crowd as if they were looking for something.
While her senses were distracted by the crowd of people, Owain had focused his attention on getting her dry. People brought out towels and blankets to warm her up, but life was slowly slipping out of her grasp as her lungs refused to work.
The light began to fade as she slowly faded into the darkness. So, this is the end, Victoria's mind wasn't at rest with the fact that she had no control at this point. While her mind was frantic, so was Owain. She heard his shouts, and felt the slaps on her cheek. It wasn't until she felt her lungs inflate that she realized death would not be her fate.
She opened her eyes wide as her lungs forced the water out when the air came in. She turned over on her side and spit out more than a mouthful of water. Throat ripping coughs made it hard to speak as she turned around to cling to Owain. Death was frightening, and now she knew. He wrapped her up in a large towel and picked her up almost effortlessly. She was shivering when she thought about it. In all of her fear she didn't realize how icy cold the water was.
"I'm sorry," Victoria mumbled through her chattering teeth.
"Just don't do it again," Owain was shivering too. She could feel it in his hands. The water must have been colder than she thought.
"Thank you, Owain. Thank you," her sea-green eyes filled with tears. She couldn't bring herself to look at him through her shame. Although all of those terrible things may have happened to her, life seemed like the better choice. Whatever doesn't kill me, will make me stronger, she thought. She had someone who actually cared if she lived or not, maybe it was more than that. Even while she refused to eat after she recovered from her previous injuries, Owain was always there to make her eat. When she wanted to be alone, he was there to take care of her. He was her shoulder to cry on.
Maybe he was the reason why she jumped. A test of faith? Maybe, she sniffed in thought. Was it her subconscious mind that pulled her into an almost accidental suicide. All this time she knew that Owain wasn't there just because he believed in her. He was there because he loved her. The thought made Victoria's cheeks flush with flattery. All of those nice things he did for her, and she only pushed him away. It was a good thing he persisted because she wouldn't be alive if he hadn't.
