"Hey," he says, popping up next to my shoulder.
I turn to look at him and laugh inwardly when I realize we're nearly at the same eye level. "Hey."
"What do you have fifth? Can you be late?"
"Yeah I have euro so I can be late," I reply, hiding my eagerness. (Euro is a real laid back, senior class)
"Ok, so you wanna go?"
"Yeah, let's do it."
We grab our stuff and turn away from the group. The need to talk gnaws at my core and I wrack my brain for anything to talk about. Luckily, he saves me and starts up the convo. I'm surprised at first because online, he just seems so awkward. But he's one of the best conversationalists I've ever met in person. Bonus? I think so.
We reach the bottom of the ramp and the senior parking lot and then he turns to me.
"So, where's your car?"
My car? "My mom is pissed at me so I don't have my car," I confess, voice tight.
"My brother just took me car," he responds, tight as well.
An awkward silence settles over us before he breaks it with, "Sooo you wanna go back up?"
"Yeah, I guess so." At this point I'm nearly dying with awkward laughter inside. This WOULD happen to me, I think ironically. Both of us forgot our cars. What are the chances?
The cross country guys seem surprised to see us again so soon. "Back already?" one of them asks.
"Yeah, we don't have a ride," Nik confesses, if a little sheepish.
Dan perks up. "I could give you guys a ride on my bike."
"You can fit three people on it?" I joke with him.
"Hell yeah. You can sit on the handle bars and Nik can be on my shoulders."
We laugh about this for a little while before Nik turns to me and asks me to go down to the media center with him to drop off his sports bag. Naturally, I say yes and circle around the group of guys to meet him on the other side.
Did I mention that there is no real plot to this lunch? It was definitely the most random lunch I've ever had. But it was fun. And that's what matters right?
Well, I guess I should finish it. One more page, you guys. One more.
