Shifting Winds
The next day when I got to school I felt like I was walking on sunshine. I could tell Candace felt the same way. Zane walked in with his typical smile. I had been eager to tell him about Candace, but I suddenly felt shy. "How're my two favorite people?" Zane asked throwing a friendly arm around my shoulder and grinning at Candace. I could feel my face warming up. Candace smirk at me didn't help much. "U'mm, we're g-good", I stammered. Zane looked at me funny. "You alright?" he asked dropping his arm from around me only to grab me by the shoulders and make me look at him. "I'm f-f-fine!" He glanced at Candace. "She okay?" Candace smiled. "I am! Last night she just introduced me to Jesus", she said softly. Zane turned back to me, a look of almost surprise on his face. "Really?" he asked her even though he was staring at me. "Yeah", I said quietly. Zane just pulled me toward him and hugged me tightly. He whispered something that I couldn't make out, but I was too stunned by his embrace to try and decipher it. Suddenly he let me go. "I gotta run to class", he said grinning. He gave Candace and one-arm hug and ran off down the hall. My heart was beating so fast I was sure that it would explode. Candace laughed at me. "Whats funny?" I demanded. "You!" she exclaimed. "Whats so funny about me?" I asked. "ANY girl in this entire school would like kill to have Zane Robinson hug them like that, and you just brushed it off like it was nothing!" I opened my mouth to protest, but the words refused to come. "Come on, we'll be late for class", she said still grinning. I was still having trouble calming my heart. Lunch came all too soon, and I knew I would have to face Zane again. For the first time I was unhappy that we had the same lunch period. Candace was looking at me weirdly. I ignored her silent glances. I was concentrating on the thoughts that were swimming in my head. Did Zane seriously like me? How could he? Did I like him? What was going on?! I felt a soft hand touch my arm in the cafe line. Instantly I knew who it was. The second I turned around I was staring into his hazel eyes. His whole team was behind him joking and laughing and didn't seem to even notice us. For that moment when our eyes locked the world around me stopped. "Can I talk to you?" he softly asked. I gulped and nodded. He grabbed my hand and led me out to a grove of trees and we sat down. He leaned his head back on the tree and smiled. This was not what I expected. I thought he would ask what the matter was and I would be forced to stumble through some sort of an explanation for the way I had acted that morning. We sat there for several minutes; me sitting beside him. "You know", he finally said, "these past days that I've known you have been some of the happiest of my entire life." I stared at him dumbfounded. .....................
