"I think we should", said Kelly, softly, yet more firmly than she had told Derek that she loved him.
"No, no!", cried Derek. "We can't just let this die!"
Derek seemed to not remember the argument he was making earlier. All thought went back to the field and the futon. The two instances were as present in his mind as they had ever been since the first time he found himself loving Kelly impurely. How could he have done such a thing? It was beautiful, it was love!
Yet, there they were, sitting at this table in a house in the middle of breaking-up. If it hadn't had been for Kelly's anger and hatred of everything he did over the past month and during this week, he would never have said anything. Kelly spoke.
"I think we should take a break."
"What? What good will that do?" Derek was both frightened and enraged. "Take a break? Since when does that ever work for anybody? Can you name one couple that 'went on break' and ended up getting back together?"
"No."
"Then why should we do that?"
It was clear, but absolutely unknown to Derek that they both had different objectives. Kelly just wanted to be done.
In an attempt to compromise, or, more accurately, put what Kelly said into words that would be more pleasing to his mind, Derek proposed another solution.
