As time went on, more and more time was spent kissing, and less and less time was spent playing catch. Eventually, Derek and Kelly's relationship had dwindled to what most relationships become - physical. While they did not have sex, nor did they have any variaton of it, Derek and Kelly spent numerous hours together on a futon "watching" Drum Corps. International videos. Every time Derek and Kelly would leave after their video watching, they would both secretly tell themselves "Never again". They never communicated the problem to each other, and thus, more problems ensued.

The last week they spent together before Derek went off to college was spent building a house with Habitat for Humanity. The trip was taken with Kelly's youth group (Derek belonged to another church), and for that week, Kelly was noticeably distant towards Derek. One night, Derek confronted her in the housing site's kitchen.

"You've been avoiding me lately."

"Yeah, I just want some space. You don't have to be around me all the time, you know."

"Yeah, but why are you always pushing me away? You've been a jerk to me for the last two months, and, you know what? I don't have to be here. I don't have to be here, Kelly! I do everything for you. I make you breakfast, I open doors for you, I wash your car, but when I say that I love you, you never say you love me back!"

There was a long pause. They sat there, at the long conference table that had been brought in for all of the volunteers that Habitat received each week. They said nothing, they thought everything. Was this it? A year and three months down the drain?
