After finding this out at Derek's birthday party that year, Derek and Grant staged their fight, where Derek slammed Grant violently into a locker after tapping his nose in secret. To the astonishment of the seventh grade, much smaller (which he was) and much nerdier (which he was not) Derek managed to make the Goliath of their grade bleed all over the lockers. Much more to the astonishment of the seventh grade, Derek and Grant then looked at each other, hugged, and together, walked to their next class.
Derek's other friend at college and Grant's older twin brother, was Alex. Alex was larger than Grant in every way. He was shier, and generally less comically conceited. It would be true to say that Alex was gentler than Grant, but it is also true to say that once Alex was involved with the roughhousing, Alex's strength was not always under control.
Derek had met Alex in the fourth grade - two years after he had met Grant. It was unknown to Derek for an entire two years that Grant even had another sibling, let alone a twin in their own grade. After being invited to Grant's birthday party in the fourth grade, Derek was shocked to see that there were two of them. That night summed up Derek and Alex's relationship up until college. Grant had made cookie dough for them to eat while they watched the movie, Treasure Planet. Alex fell asleep halfway through the movie with the bowl in his lap, and their dog, Scout, licked the bowl until a puddle of drool atleast a few inches deep was present at the bottom.
