Different Masks
Dear Reader,

This is a very old story, which I started writing in the beginning of my freshman year in high school. I worked on it for years, adding bits here, bits there, until I ended up with over a hundred handwritten pages. I never finished it, though I came close, I have an ending in mind. It's been more than a decade since I started writing it, but not a single page has been thrown out. So, I now take a stack of papers that have faded, and been worn around the edges, and I'm going to make it go digital, as it should have many many years ago. It is my most significant as it shows a progression of my growth as a writer at that early time. It also holds in it the only written documentation of certain events in my life, camouflaged to look like it's fiction. The characters were based off of people I knew, some characters had the honor of housing many, as my love interest changed in real life, I altered the main love interest accordingly. Well, kind of.

Can I in good conscience type it all out word for word without giving into my intense desire to edit? No, I can't but I'll fight it tooth and nail anyway, because to change anything in this very first version could take away from the specialness of it. I won't even change the names, but understand that instead of giving my characters real names, I gave them handles or what would be better known as screen names. I loved the movie Hackers, and was already a frequent goer of a local Bulletin Board System (BBS). I also threw every outlandish thing I could in this; time travel, esp, amnesia, a mysterious lover, the list could go on if I let myself really look at it closer.

Simply saying, what you'll read is an amateur's writing. Look, if it doesn't make you cry, it'll definitely make you laugh. Just looking at it makes me smile, but maybe one day it will rise up out of it's own ashes, like the Phoenix the main character is eventually named after and become one of my best works. Who knows.

I am definetly not writing this now for fame, but to share with others a piece of my youth. The original dates have been changed to ten years later because though I may have felt that the internet was so widespread, I'm sure that back in the late eighties it wasn't. So anyway, enjoy!

Sincerely,
The Anonymous Writer
