Jimmy stopped by to show me his fishing bag he put together for Boone TVA. All he is taking is some worms, craws and blade baits. I thought it was rather interesting that he wasn't going to throw any swim baits. You would figure since it is the fall and the bait fish would be moving to the back of the creeks. I did happen to mention it to him and he thought it was a good idea. Since he is from Tennessee and has fished with shiners most of his life there. He decided he would toss some swim baits in the bag.
I was going to go this weekend but my boat should be ready Saturday and the Potomac is calling me. It is kind of killing me that he is heading there for a 4 day trip. We typically do an annual 10 day trip in the spring where we fish 9 different lakes and reservoirs in Tennessee. This year was my 10th annual trip and Jimmy’s 12th or 13th. Steve and Bill have been doing it for about 18 to 20 consecutive years. Another interesting thing is no matter what lake or river we fish all the locals there free line shiners. It works and you catch a lot of big fish especially at Dale Hollow. Dale Hollow is where the world’s largest small mouth bass was caught. This year was an exceptional year. We fished mainly with plastics and caught over 300 fish in our 10 day trip. What we figured out this about fishing Boone TVA was surprising. We found spots that the local guys who we normally fish with do not even know about.
This past spring we were heading out around 10 pm and I met a couple of fisherman coming in who were fishing all day. We did the customary introductions and they asked where I was from I told them and they began to tell me this just got out of prison from the same state I was from. They were put in jail shooting deer out of season. They came back to Tennessee and have been keeping there noses clean.
The conversation turned to what I was doing there and told them we were on a 10 day fishing trip and they asked how we were doing. I said we have been doing well with shiners and they gave me a little chuckle. I said what is so funny? I told them that normally anywhere else we do throw plastics but during our annual 10 day trip the guys I fish with who where mainly local guys always free lined shiners. We experiment with different lures and techniques but soon as someone catches a fish on a shiner we switch back.
They let me in on a little secret. They told me that Boone was a green lake. They showed me some of the lures they used. Interesting I said I will remember that. The next day we stopped at good ole Wal-Mart. I picked up some watermelon and green pumpkin worms and craws.
The next day I caught over 30 small mouth and large mouth bass. Jimmy caught just as many. The real trick was to know what color to throw but also figuring out where the fish were
I guess this page is more about Tennesee fishing.
