Tonight I'm going to talk about my second favorite band: Beirut.
Beirut has this sort of gypsy feeling to it, and it makes you think of the russian grandparents you never had.
Beirut's front-man and master mind is Mr. Zach Francis Condon.
Zach is a man who is crazy about brass instruments, and whose right wrist is shorter than the other due to an accident he had when he was 14. As a result, he can't reach around guitar or violin necks, but he can play the ukulele, and I'm so glad he can.
Zach Condon made me realize how amazing ukuleles -that musical instrument I thought was silly- are by showing me the beautiful music you can make with them, and I decided to learn to play the ukulele because of him.
But brass instruments and ukulele aren't the only instruments he can play. In his second album, for example, he played percussion, organ, piano, mandolin, "you know, anything that was in front of me, really," he adds, while effortlessly jamming a random tune that sounds fantastic. He can even play a conch shell. He is mighty.
The white t-shirts he wears over his thin torso, the french horns tattooed on his wrists, his wavy brown hair, his little lips, his eyes; He looks like a little boy who just woke up from a nap. He's quiet and smart, incredibly talented, and let's the music do the talking. Just watching him drunkenly sing 'knife' in some street in Paris, with his band, makes you want to be his best friend.
I can say without a doubt that his music is beautiful. It's calming, intelligent, and overwhelming. He knows when to do the right thing. The chords and melodies, being both protagonists, go with each other perfectly and in a flawless transition, with his voice being just about the right complement. Zach Condon sings about the sea, the city lights, the restless nights, forks and knives and sunday smiles.
Right now, I can't help by replay the melodies he creates for us with euphoniums and trumpets and french horns, and I really want them to stay with me until I fall asleep tonight.
Beirut are my definition of good music. Even my sister, who at first said they sounded like music from a german beer festival, likes them now.
