His knowledge is dangerous. I realize tat this is because it matters to me whether or not he accepts me. It matters if he thinks I am smart, or pretty, or ugly, or insane. I care what he thinks, and that gives him power over me and mine. it is an uncomfortable thought.
"Wait." He reaches out, as if to touch me again, but checks himself halfway through the gesture.
I stand frozen, like the proverbial deer caught in the headlights. I think if i move too quickly I might shatter. I am unsure whether or not I can move at all.
"What's your name? I see you running every day, and I don't know your name." His voice is quiet. it is a cloudy day, and the ocean is angry. I can barely hear him over the surf.
I stand up straighter and do not answer, looking him directly in the eyes. He meets my gaze, a rare thing, and does not flinch away. I do not know what to make of this.
"Look, my name is Darren, okay? Darren Zaneth. I live right there... Just... What is your name?" He becomes visibly more tense.
"Darren." My voice is working independently of my will. I have no will. "I'm leaving at the end of the summer. That's like two and a half months, right? I don't want to get attached to anyone here. You don't know me. Better that it stays that way." My feet decide to turn around and head back towards home.
"Better for you, or better for me?" He is angry, probably rightfully so.
Better for you. "Better for the both of us." You couldn't handle me, dear boy. I do not want to care about you. I will force myself not too. I will walk in the other direction.
"You can't just leave. "
