I Never Needed Anybody
As she kept getting closer to the way too familiar front door, through the way too familiar hall, trying to ignore the stares from the guy that lived next door (who for some reason was sitting in front of his apartment, doing nothing), wondering why on earth someone would want to look at her, she remembered she hadn't brought her key with her.
She started to freak out, trying to think of a way of pretending that being locked out of her apartment was in her original plans.
She wanted to punch herself in the face, and started to whisper curses, wishing she wasn't the way she was.
Finally, trying to calm herself down, she figured it was okay to sit at her front door, and wait until the building manager, who coincidentally would show up later than usual today, arrived, which would be in about 3 hours.
she regretted having the brilliant idea of going out without a sweater.
She felt she couldn't take the cold anymore, and she fantasized about lying in her bed, under the warm covers, while listening and singing along to that sad song.
She wanted to cry right there and then, but she knew it wasn't a good idea.
She felt extremely uncomfortable by the fact that someone was sharing her general space.
So she closed her eyes, in an attempt of ripping herself out of reality, but it didn't work, because in that precise moment, she heard his voice, suddenly next to her, "Are you okay?"
She didn't know if she wanted to laugh or cry at the question. Her heart started racing the way it always did when a stranger talked to her (even if it was to ask her what the time was), and she was terribly scared of looking up.
She decided nodding, while her eyes were still closed, was safe enough. And so she did just that.
But after she did it, she couldn't hear steps walking away from her, and that's when she noticed she hadn't heard them coming either.
And, only out of unbearable curiosity, she opened her eyes, to find the boy still standing there, staring at her. She blushed madly, but hoped it would look like the weather's fault.
