I Never Needed Anybody
"No."
She wanted to say more, she really did. But she couldn't bring herself to do it, simply because she wasn't sure of what she wanted to say.
"You sure?"
"Yes, look, this is... This is too much for me, okay? I can't really handle conversations. I don't even know if this should be called a conversation. Let's just say I'm anti-social, and you can head back to your place, while I stay here and wait until Mr. Morris shows up so I can get into mine."
She was surprised, extremely surprised, by her speech, but she was happy she had gotten it all off her chest. She had never said that much to a stranger, and she was proud of her braveness. Her voice had shaken a little, and she had rambled, but she was content with herself nonetheless.
He couldn’t deny he was relieved. It was not his fault that she didn’t like him, after all.
This girl just seemed to hate people, and at the moment, he really didn’t care why.
He didn’t want her to hate him. He didn’t want anyone to hate him. He couldn’t help it, he was too afraid of being alone.
Of course, he’d never admit that.

On the other hand, that’s how she wanted to be right now. Alone.
Yeah, sure, he was cute, and nice, and he liked her favorite band. But, so what? She was perfectly okay with being on her own, she didn’t need this.
At least she wished she didn’t. She wished she wasn’t getting sick of her company. She wished she wasn’t so embarrassed of who she was.
Still, that didn’t make her change her mind.
Such a tiny social encounter was already exhausting her, because she had to keep thinking of what was the right thing to say or do. She didn’t really know how to be herself around unfamiliar people, and it was too much of a pressure. She didn’t want to disappoint them.
Maybe, in a way, she was a pleaser too.
