"What? What's the big deal? Just a little never hurt anyone."
"It's just..." Sarah trailed off. It was just another thing in a long list of things that seemed to slowly be driving her and Karen apart.
"I'm busy" She lied.
"Busy doing what?" Karen looked extremely doubtful.
"Studying! Not all of us can be natural geniuses."
"Blah blah blah. I am not a genius and I do study. I just also have fun. Do you remember fun Sarah? We used to have it all the time."
"Yeah..." Sarah did remember. Images of running around in sunshine and laughing filled her mind. It seemed so long ago.
"So, you should come out with us. You can study all day Saturday if it makes you happy."
Sarah said nothing. Karen looked down at her, hands on her hips. Then, she stuck out her tongue and made a hideous face.
"Eh ya dun seh yeth mah feth weh steh luk dis." She said through grotesquely twisted lips. Sarah couldn't help it, she laughed.
"It looks good on you." She joked.
"Ah'm nah kiddin'." Karen used her fingers to splay her eyes out wide at the same time her tongue moved in and out of her deformed mouth.
"Alright, alright. I'll come with you." Sarah relented finally. She couldn't resist Karen's silliness. It was one of the things that had made them such good friends.
"Sweeeet." Karen jumped up and down enthusiastically, sending hundreds of little bracelets and necklaces clanking. "Okay. I have to go now to, you know, do stuff."
"To go make out with Mark I assume?"
"Maybeeee."
"Maybe means yes." Sarah was still grinning. As jealous as she was, it was good to see her friend so happy.
"Maybe means maybe. But anyway, see you Friday."
"See you Friday." She called after her friend as her black clad silhouette disappeared back in the school.
In the end, she would turn out to be busy on Friday after all. But for now, Sarah was completely oblivious to what awaited her. She sat back down under her tree, and returned to the magical world of her notebook.
