"I know it's hard on you dear. And I'm sorry. But you can't keep using your mother as an excuse to not have a life. I worry about you."
"I know grandma. I don't mean to make you worry, but school-" Sarah broke off. Tears stung at her eyes.
"Shh. It's okay. Obviously you had a bad day dear. We'll let it go for now."
"Thanks." Sarah pulled away, turning her head to quickly brush at her eyes.
"Well, anyway, there's some nice hot stew for you." Her grandmother turned and filled a large bowl from the pot on the stove, then laid it in front of Sarah on the counter. The smell was so overwhelmingly wonderful that Sarah forgot her melancholy immediately and started to eat.
"Good?"
"Mmm." She said, in between ravenous bites. It had been a long time since her sandwich under the tree.

"Anyway, after you eat, I have a surprise for you."
"A supwass?" Sarah's mouth was still filled with stew, but in her excitement she didn't notice.
"Indeed. I want to give you something."
"Give me what?" Sarah asked, momentarily distracted from her stew.
"If I told you it wouldn't be a surprise. Now finish your stew.I'll be right back. I have to finish up a few things." With that her grandmother got up and wandered off.
Reluctantly she relented, and turned away from her retreating grandmother. It wasn't in Sarah's nature to be patient. But still, the stew was very good, and she finished it in record time.
"I'm done!" She shouted, jumping up from the counter.
"Come meet me in my bedroom dear." She heard her grandmother yell.
The house they lived in wasn't very large. Basically the entirety of the first floor was made up of the kitchen and the living room. All of the bedrooms were upstairs.
Sarah bounded up the stairs, winging past her mother's barely used bedroom and her own catastrophic disaster area until she arrived at the little bedroom on the
