The first time she saw him she was sitting under a tree with her notebook, chewing idly on her pencil. It was her habit to sit there during lunchtime. A plastic bag was crumpled beside her, the only sign that she had eaten.
When she saw him walk by, she immediately stopped chewing on her pencil and began to take notes.
*Tall, handsome. Distinct facial features. Blue eyes, large cheekbones. Blond. Clothing is odd, out of fashion. Distinctly foreign*
She tapped her pencil on the notebook, and then glanced back at the boy. He was moving rapidly toward the school, not noticing her. The wind blew a strand of hair in front of her eyes and she briskly brushed it away, then returned to writing.
*An alien? Some kind of ancient being hiding in human skin? A prince from a far off land incognito to search for a worthy bride?*
Definitely the last one, she thought. Romantic ideas filled her head. She could imagine all of the little things he would do, trying to find his perfect love.
*A dance? At a school dance he will dance with every girl, and then fall deeply in love with the chubby bookish girl because she is so kind and charming*
Folding the notebook against her chest, she leaned back against the tree and closed her eyes. In her mind she saw the boy holding her close with their faces nearly touching. She was blushing, so overwhelmed that he would choose her, out of all the girls. Then he was leaning in, moving toward her lips for what she imagined would be the most wonderful kiss in existence.
"Sarah!"
She jolted out of her reverie. Now she was actually blushing.
"Karen? What are you doing here?" She asked, hurriedly closing her notebook.
"I came to see you in your self imposed exile." Her friend was tall, thin, with the large beautiful eyes you only ever saw on the cover of magazines. She was also a natural blond, but you couldn't tell. Her hair stood up in short, pitch black spikes from her head, leaving her multiple ear piercings easily visible. Sarah envied everything about her.
"Oh. What about Mark and his friends?"
"I'm not always with Mark." Her friend objected grumpily.
"Only when you're awake..." Sarah teased.
"Stop it! It's just, he's soooo-" She paused, a dreamy look entering her overly lined eyes, "Amazingly spectacularly cute and fantastic!"
