My feet lightly crunched on the hardened vegetation as I ambled farther on. The charred field continued. It must have been big to make such a wide groove. If I stretched my arms out completely, they wouldn't even touch the sides of the still-standing corn. Excitement started to build inside me. I couldn't wait until I finally found it. After about a quarter mile, I started to see a bit of smoke rising. I was close. The smoke got thicker the more I walked and soon I was practically standing at the center. Looking forward, there was only one bend left in the groove until I got to ground zero. I could tell. In the instant before I peeked around the corner of greenery, I got a sudden chill. A little plot of uncertainty raised in my mind, telling me 'stop!', telling me 'this is a bad idea!'. But I didn't listen. I didn't listen at all.
The object was lodged in the earth at an unnatural angle, with sparks jumping off it. The edges were rounded perfectly, and smooth, like an egg. What I suppose was the bottom was flat and a bluish flame emerged from the undercarriage. Even though it was night, I could tell the exterior was a crimson red. If I squinted I could make out crumpled areas on the frame and bits of material littered all around the object. There weren't any windows, but there was a nodule almost camouflaged into it, like a hidden door. This was where the smoke was coming from. But it wasn't anything like a meteor. It was a pod.
At this point my excitement disappeared. It drained out of my body and was replaced instantaneously by terror. I sunk to the ground, my legs shaking and unable to support me. Ice cold fear gripped my heart. This... this wasn't what I was expecting. Things like this don't happen. What exactly was this giant capsule-like object sitting before me? It couldn't have come from outer space. Could it? If so, then this was even bigger than finding a simple space rock. My mind reeled back to all the science fiction movies I'd seen, but I only found images of epidemics and lasers and monsters. The only thing going through my head was, 'is this real'?
Before I could comprehend the situation, the hidden door suddenly burst open. I impulsively darted into the corn stalks to my left and peered out. Two figures appeared near the pod and started moving about. One looked as if it was surveying the damage, while the other wandered about the burnt grass. My heart pounded in my chest as if it were to jump out any second. I prayed they wouldn't sense me. I couldn't see them very clearly in the darkness and I hoped it was the same for them. All I observed was that they were upright when they walked. The one meandering about turned towards the other and a crude noise rang in my ears. I winced at the frequency and tone. It was kind of mechanical; high pitched and sounded slightly of static. Was this their means of communication? It stopped soon enough but the other creature didn't respond. Maybe it was a distress signal, or a war cry. Without realizing it I began to tremble,
