My breath came in ragged gasps as I ran down the streets, following the tinted sky. Was this thing actually farther away than I thought? I stopped for a moment and began to doubt what I had just seen. Perhaps it was my imagination? Maybe I was just too absorbed to notice anything. I contemplated turning back, away from this fool's errand. But... what if? What if some part of that meteor managed to survive unscathed and was just laying somewhere, waiting to be discovered? I glanced in the general direction I thought it'd be and realized the light in the sky was fading- quickly. If I didn't make up my mind right there, I wouldn't be able to pinpoint it's location. I wouldn't know where to go. Despite my head telling me it'd be useless to go farther in this darkness, I started running again. I listened to my heart. My heart that told me this was exciting and full of mystery. Nothing happens in my life. I'm aware that most of it is my own fault. But for once I was enticed by something not so mundane. I had to go on.
By the time the sky had completely darkened I was standing on the edge of a country road, corn fields spread out before me. Did it land here? The stalks were taller than even my head, so I couldn't get a look at the whole picture. The surrounding communities were mostly farmland and old run-down buildings from back in the day. If anything were to happen out here, I doubt that anyone would notice. But it was such a cliche place for a meteor to fall. Hesitantly, I stepped forward into the thick greenery. It was really difficult to see past my hands, especially since it was dark. I had to push the stalks hastily out of my way while also looking down, trying to spot some sort of unearthly material. My eyes on the ground, I almost fell forward when I realized the resistance against my movement was gone. Where was the rest of the farmland? I raised my head. The corn stalks were burnt to a crisp. Not just a few but the majority of them were completely gone. Incinerated. The ground was blackened and charred like there had just been a fire. But the air around it was crisp and cool. I moved my foot and heard a clank against my shoe. Peering down in the darkness I reached out my hand but retracted it quickly. Whatever it was, it was smoldering, a bit too hot to touch. Could it be? What I've been looking for? It was certainly small but it couldn't possibly have made that big an impact to melt the crop. Moreover, the more I studied my surrounding I realized the burnt field almost made a path that snaked around out of site. Maybe a bigger meteor had first crashed here and slid further along. A small smile crept up on my face. I had found something no one else had yet. Slowly I picked up the piece near my shoe, switching it from hand to hand so it wouldn't hurt my skin. Once I blew on it and cooled it down, I stuffed it in my pocket, and began walking down the scorched path that would alter my life.
