consequently rattling the corn stalks near me.
They heard.
I fell back and within a second the crop I had just been sitting in was gone, sliced clean off. That could have been my head. Only one row of stalks now separated me from the other worldly beings. I glanced up, stricken with fear. The creature that stood there with a long sickle attached to it's arm looked at me with piercing eyes, as if it was staring into my soul. For a moment, time froze, and everything became all too real. I was a goner. Panic swept through me and I scrambled to get away. My legs were still shaking so I nearly slipped on dirt trying to run. Adrenaline kicked in and my senses heightened considerably. I could hear a rushing sound behind me. It was them. They were coming after me. Tears welled up in the corners of my eyes. I couldn't let them catch me. Who knows what they would do to me. I didn't want to die strapped to a table being dissected for who-knows-what purpose. I sprinted as fast as I could. I had no idea which way I was going. I could only concentrate on getting to the road and eventually to safety. A dull pain started in my legs as I realized just how weak my muscles were. I didn't know how much longer I was gonna be able to hang in there. Finally, nearly at my limit, the soft field turned into hardened pavement. If I wasn't so scared I probably would've let out a yelp of joy. But I didn't have time to rejoice. I was being chased, hunted, by something horrible. Still running, I unconsciously glimpsed behind me. In the street light a figure stood hunched over in an aggressive stance, and as the wind blew, something that looked like long white hair danced in the night breeze. I whipped my head around and swallowed hard. That thing may have stopped chasing me, but there was no way I was going to stop running.
