Sanctuary
The smell of blood stained our clothes, the night, engulfing us both in our fight to be safe. I can sense danger ahead but my hand tightly held my sisters’. I was afraid, afraid she’ll disappear as the night gets darker and the winds turn cold.

Finally, after running through forest after forest, they reached the city. It was big. Both of them, covered in dirt, quickly dug into the trash looking for old clothes. Soomin found an old beige dress for Misan and she found a grown adult pants for herself. Both of them were barefooted, but they continue to roam the streets, digging in trash looking for food.

"Misan, take this." She hands her sister an unopened bag of bread. "It’s still fresh." she said putting it into her hands. "But, Unni, where’s yours?" she asks, still rubbing the dirt off her face. Soomin smiles, trying to forget the aching feeling in her stomach. "I already ate, so eat yours."

Misan, without knowing that her sister had ate some left over beef that had rotted, ate the bread. Soomin smiles and pats her head again, "Remember this okay? What happen to our family, you should never tell anyone. Do you hear?" Soomin knew the war couldn't of have been this bad, but something told her, people were after their family. "Yes, I won’t." Misan stuff the last remaining bread in her mouth and lay by her sisters’ side as her she spreads the newspaper for them to sleep.

"Unni, will the war disappear tomorrow?"

"I hope so."

Soomin stood up and gently patted Misans’ head. "I’m going to find us some food for tomorrow. If you see someone strange, remember to scream okay?" Misan nods and watch as her sister walked away. It was tonight, tonight that she didn’t think her sister would disappear from her forever.

"Unni, you’ll come back right?"
"Of course I will."
