Let's break down how much you actually make.
$34,500 starting salary
$21,360 after everything is taken out
That's $1,780/month
If you work 22 days out of the month, that's $81/day
Now, you are contracted for 8 hours. That's a little over $10/hour.
But, if you have to make phone calls, grade, want a clean desk, need lesson plans... anything outside of managing your classroom, you'll spend at least two more hours at school. That's $8/hour.
Plus all the work you take home, add on another two hours. That's $6.75/hour.
Oh! And did I mention that there is always work to be done on the weekends?

You get the point. I hope. And if you don't, put this damn thing down. It might hurt your brain a little too much.

Did I mention that being a teacher has a high chance of making you cynical, snarky, and sarcastic? No? Well, now I have.

Being a teacher makes living a little tight most of the time. So, if you're already rich, be a teacher! Balancing your checkbook won't make you want to cry.

On top of living expenses, the United States does this wonderful thing where it lets the teachers pay for the majority of their supplies. Oh, it also makes sure that the teachers have to have nice-looking classrooms. That the teacher must pay for out of their own pocket. Being a teacher is expensive. Being a teacher can leave you deeper in the hole than when you went in.

At this point, I bet you're sitting there thinking, "Dear goodness, why the heck is this woman still a teacher if she has so many negative things to say about it?" I'll tell you why. I love my kids. Every single batch of them. Even when they are jerks to me. Even when they disrespect me. Even though they will forget who I am the moment they leave my classroom. I love my kids because I know that they have the potential to do something great. To be something great. And I love them because they are MY kids. No matter what. Forever and always.
