It is so extremely important to meet people besides other teachers. These people will give you firm ground to stand on and remind you that, unlike the other teachers, people do have a life outside of work. And yes, you need one, too.

Getting through each day, as a teacher, is a task not to be taken lightly, and you must work to find that one thing that gets you through those tough days. You will have plenty of them.

Drinking helps manage that first year, as well. But watch yourself on this one. It can be a slippery slope filled with bad text messages, stupid Facebook posts, beer-goggle-induced one-night-stands, and general regret. Oh, and you could lose your job. There's that, too. But seriously, learn how to scope out good beer. And stick with beer. Whatever you do, do not drink hard alcohol. The kids can tell. Drink on the weekends or after a particularly difficult day. And limit yourself. Two beers, tops. Any more than that and you're looking at those one-night-stands that you wake up next to and think, "Dear goodness, how drunk was I?" You never want those. Ever. Especially once you realize that they managed to call their phone with yours and have your number. And then they text you wanting to date you... I digress. Awkward.
Don't drink too much. Yea.

If you land in a new place, don't be afraid to try something such as online dating in order to meet people. Yes, it's awkward. Yes, there are creeps. Yes, it makes you feel pathetic, lonely, hopeless, and skeezy. Now that all the negatives are out of the way... there are tons of people in the same place as you - they have jobs that make it difficult for them to meet people under normal circumstances. There are actually good people out there in cyberland... and if you just tell people you met at the bar, it avoids the uncomfortable conversation that tends to go like this:
"How did you meet (insert your attractive date's name)?"
"We actually met through OkCupid."
"Oh my God! How do you know he's not a serial killer? Wait... why are you doing online dating? You can do SO much better than that..."
"Well, you see-"
"No. I'm going to find you a real man. Not some fake internet guy that's going to kill you in your sleep."
