Story: "Fetching Dreams"

Hello there! My name is Harlin and I used to be a dog until recently. Now I am a human being just like my master! Master Luke is my favorite person in the whole world. In fact, he IS my world. I wish I could say Master Luke has been in my life ever since I could remember. Maybe then I wouldn't have nightmares at night. . .but it's all right. Master Luke came for me and I have never been better! He is always very patient with me and never yells. But. He is graduating from high school. Then he will move away. Far away from me where I can't see him everyday. His parents don't like me very much. I overheard them saying that they would take me away after Master Luke leaves for college. I. . .I don't want that but I have no choice. So before I leave for good, the one thing I'd like to do is make Master Luke happy and make him realize just how grateful I am to him for saving me that day. So I made a promise with The Witch. I don't know who she really is just that she is a powerful person. She scares me. But I needed her help to become human. Master Luke's reaction is understandable. He is confused and does not understand. I hope he will get used to it soon. There are so many things I'd like to say to him. So many things I'd like to do for him. To make him happy. Yes, that's what I would love to do for my master. For him I would do anything just to see him smile. But lately, I don't know. My master has a very good female friend. Her name is Lucy. They are good together. . .only it makes me uneasy. I--I don't know why. They should be together. The Witch says it's because my heart is impure. She even dared to imply that I. . .I wanted to. . .to mate with Master Luke. Impossible! In all my years, I have not seen a human couple made up of two males. But now that I think about it. As a dog, I loved it whenever Master Luke petted me or brushed my fur. He even let me sleep in his bed although his mother hates it when I'm on any of the furniture. Lately. Lately. . .I've wanted more contact. I want Master to not just to pet my head. He doesn't brush me anymore because I am human. Maybe that's why he doesn't hold me anymore. I. . I guess it would be nice for Master to hug me like other humans do. I tried holding Master's hand the other day but he told me that gesture is only reserved for those in a "relationship". But I thought we were in one? Master and pet. Does that not count? Sometimes I wonder if I was being too greedy asking for everything to be the same after I had turned human. I know Master Luke tolerates me sleeping in his bed but I wonder if I should find a different place to sleep. Otherwise, I feel like I'd be tempted to do something Master Luke certainly wouldn't like at all. Maybe the Witch was right. Maybe my heart is impure and I'm more selfish than I thought.
