Marianna stood up. This was going no where quick and she wasn't in the mood for John or the coroner tonight with their so called humor. She knew that it was their way of dealing with the death of someone but for her it was personal. Someone was killing a person with family or loved ones who now will have shattered lives because of this. She wasn't about to quit till she found out who and brings them in.
"I will be back at the office. Let me know when you get done with the autopsy will ya? Maybe we will get lucky and they left some DNA for us." Marianna said.
"You might as well go home and get some sleep till morning. You know I won't have any results till the end of day tomorrow." Coroner Hughs said.
"Why are you backlogged that badly?"
"No, I am not and it's because of the cutbacks in our department. I think if they could, those damn beurocrats would have the janitor do the autopsies if he thought it would save them money. Needless to say, unless it's a major crash with multiple victims, I am not allowed any overtime whatsoever except to call time of death like now." Coroner Hughes said.
"That's just great. So my potential leads gonna be on ice until morning because they don't feel finding a killer is worth it during off hours. That's just great."
"I will call you as soon as I finish."
Marianna smiled. "Thanks, I know its not your fault."
It was getting cold out since October was closing in on them. Each night seemed a little cooler. Marianna left a few more orders for the beat cops regarding witness statements etc and decided that she might as well go home as Coroner Hughes suggested to her. Tomorrow she would catch her killer after a full nights sleep.
Marianna made the four mile walk back to her tiny attic apartment on Perry Street. She could have driven to the crime scene if her car had been fixed that day the way it was supposed to have been. Instead she had been forced to pay for another cab for the day. This had better be the last time she thought as she walked up the three flights of stairs to her apartment.
The apartment was quiet as she entered. Her cat Meeko greeted her with a meow as he lifted his head up for a brief moment from the couch before falling peacefully back to sleep. She had lived here for the past five years since her divorce. She had no furniture of her own as they provided it with the apartment. No, she brought her clothes and Meeko and that was all she had in the world. That was all she ever wanted again. She didn't mind the occasional sex and dinner once in awhile but she no longer desired a husband or a love interest. After finding out her husband had been screwing her
