WHEN THE DARKNESS CLEARED
best friend for the two out of three years that they were married, she was finished with having a personal life. It wasn't worth it anymore. The next time would destroy her as it nearly had this time. Marianna grabbed a beer from the fridge and plopped on the couch next to Meeko. All he desired was an occasional rub, a bowl full of milk and food and a clean litter box. She was pretty content herself with their agreement. Marianna flipped through the channels on cable till she found a show that she knew would lull her to sleep. She wasn't sure what time it was when she felt herself falling asleep but she did remember curling up to Meeko and watching David Letterman act as if he was actually funny when he discussed everyone elses misgivings in life as if they didn't have to live with them already. For someone who had been caught cheating on his own spouse, she laughed inside at the thought of his wife taking all of his money away from him and putting him through hell for the next nine months. He was a pig in her eyes.
2:10 A.M.
"Marianna are you in there? Come on answer the door."
Marianna sat up rubbing her head wondering why she had overslept.
The knock kept getting louder until Marianna woke up and clearly realised that it was still dark out and someone was at the door.
Swinging the door open, she came face to face with John. His face was red and she could tell he was upset with her.
"What are you doing here John? It's two in the morning and I don't have time for this. We talked about this."
"Don't flatter yourself. You didn't answer your phone and the Captain sent me to get you. We have another homicide five miles west of the first. He wants you there yesterday. By the way, we never talked about crap. I will be waiting in the car. I wouldn't want people to get the wrong idea about us."
Marianna wanted to apologise for the assumption but it was too late. John had walked out before she could say a word, slamming the door behind him. She would love to tell him that she can walk there but her feet were killing her and it sounded like the Capt. was gonna kill her if she didn't get there soon. Instead she threw her hair up into a messy bunn and grabbed a jacket from the hall closet on the way back out the door.
John was sitting in his squad car. She spotted him looking out of the corner of his eye but he wouldn't dare let her know that. Instead, as soon as she tried to smooth things over with him, he hit the siren and gassed the car so as to push her back against the seat.
