leaving Levi speechless and somewhat disappointed.

Walking out of the coffee shop and leaving Levi in a state of disbelief filled Elaine with a sense of pride and accomplishment. After all, Levi needed a blow to that colossal ego of his, yet she couldn't help feeling a twinge of remorse when she thought of those doleful eyes staring back at her. Every time she closed her eyes, Levi's gaze surfaced from her memory. She nearly darted back to tell him... something, something that she failed to identify. But her inflated pride prevented her from returning to the coffee shop.

Throughout the entire day, Elaine's thoughts continuously returned to that smile which attempted to hide his anguish and those eyes which betrayed his smile's veneer. Guilt. The parasite gnawed at her brain pervading every thought. She couldn't shake the feeling despite her rationalizations. Didn't he deserve to be disparaged? In any case, Levi abused her first. His condescension practically beseeched reproach. It had to be done! Her mind focused on Levi and those soulful eyes through every class she took that day. He commanded every thought that entered her brain, and this pattern continued until sleep found Elaine lying in her bed that night.

She awoke early the next morning. As Elaine lumbered out of bed, she realized that her routine for two years might be ruined. What if Levi went to Penny Lane this morning? Would he try to speak to her again? Well, Elaine refused to be driven from her territory. If he wanted to impinge on her property, he had better be prepared for war. She performed her regular schedule with increased gusto and rode her bike with unsurpassed brio. Once she arrived, Elaine stood outside Penny Lane for a minute or two outfacing the coffee shop, clutching the book she grabbed this morning. For one of the few moments in her life, Elaine felt intimidated by no less than a scraggly boy named Levi Gorski. What would he say to her? Would he be irate, humiliated, or worst of all benevolent? After what felt like an eternity, she finally summoned the courage to open the door and enter the infernal coffee shop.
