Elaine surveyed the area avoiding the one corner which she knew would spell her ultimate doom. Eventually, she allowed her glance to wander to her once pleasant haven, and, without fail, there he sat. Levi surveyed his coffee and sprawled on the chair in the same manner as yesterday. Elaine amused herself with the thought that he glued himself to the seat in order to wait for her return. Before wounding her pride, she rested her aviators upon her nose in order to shield her eyes from view and attempted to approach Levi insouciantly. However, she only succeeded in stumbling over one of the coffee tables. Once she resurfaced from the pits of abasement and after suffering some minor casualties, Elaine successful arrived before Levi. She silently prayed that those eyes of his would fail to meet her own. When she opened her mouth, only one word managed to clumsily topple out of it.
"Hello," sounded the slight voice of a frightened little girl. Elaine expected herself to say something more pivotal and remarkable than the average greeting, but her mind refused to work. It appeared that Levi was preparing to lift his head, so Elaine's lips, terrified of that piercing gaze, operated independently from her mind and began spitting out a string of words while her eyes dropped to the floor. "I apologize for my behavior yesterday. I didn't mean to act so harshly. Well, yes I did, but I immediately regretted my actions. However, don't think I'm groveling. I don't need you to forgive me because you instigated everything."
Elaine's eyes remained bound to the floor. For several minutes silence preceded her speech until she succeeded in separating her gaze from the floor. Tentatively, she stole a glance at his face. A smile spread across Levi's features: an honest, genuine smile. Yet, his smile possessed ambiguity. Was it mocking her foolishness, or was it an appreciation for her candor?
Before she could stop herself, Elaine quickly asked, "May I sit with you?" The query startled her. Elaine searched the coffee shop hoping to find the inquirer whose knees remained steady. The question seemed to surprise Levi as well, but his pleasure remained evident upon his features.
