"I'll agree to move, but only if you agree to enjoy a cup of coffee with me first. I would hate for us to leave on bad terms." The boy obviously thought he was being incredibly suave by striking up such a deal. It annoyed Elaine that he made her feel as if she were some presumptuous brute while he appeared like the very essence of charm and civility. What a charade...

"I would, but, you see..." She attempted to think of a convincing fib in order to avoid further embarrassment. "I forgot to turn off the stove." Her falsehood certainly lacked originality. She never obtained any skill for lying.

"I understand if you don't want to sit with me. After all, I did steal your coveted sanctuary, but there is no need to lie so blatantly." How did he do that? Now Elaine felt impertinent. Now Elaine believed she was the one who had insulted him rather than vice versa.

"Well, I suppose I could stay for a few minutes," Elaine heard her derisory voice mutter. She refused to leave when the swindler thought her a foolish, unrefined oaf.

"Please, don't feel as though you have to sit with me. Only sit if you want to be here," he expressed with an apologetic tone as if he felt remorseful for placing Elaine in a position that she found disagreeable, but Elaine knew his true intentions. He wanted Elaine Porter to admit that she would like to stay with him, admit that she wasn't staying only out of obligation. The mere thought of such a subterfuge repulsed her. Was it not enough that she already told him she would stay? Elaine found such a severe avarice intolerable.

"I'm sorry, but I don't believe I ever caught your name," she said with a feigned courtesy.

"Levi Gorski," Levi replied while grinning and standing with an out-reached hand toward Elaine. Elaine grabbed his hand, gave it one decisive shake, and casually said
"Goodbye, Levi Gorski." With that, Elaine Rosaline Porter strolled out of Penny Lane
