The woman set the gemstone on the side table and crossed the room to the kitchen where the phone sat with a blinking red light. She pressed the button to listen to her messages and then opened her refrigerator in search of something to eat for dinner.
"Hello, Susanna. It's Mike. Mike Stanley. I know you probably had a long day at the office doing whatever it is you do so well, but I was hoping I could take you out tonight for a little relaxation. I'm in town for the holidays and hoped we could catch up. If you're too busy with it being just four days before Christmas, I understand, but if you're up for a night out, give me a call. I look forward to hearing from you. Alright, bye, Susanna."
Susanna stared into the refrigerator without seeing any of the food inside. Mike was an old family friend she'd been interested in back in high school. Now it was seven years since she'd last seen him and he turned up in little old Beckman City asking her out. After the strange day she'd been through, a night out was exactly what she needed. She picked up the phone, dialed Mike's number, and listened to it ring. Mike answered on the second ring and the two set up their evening.
After hanging up, Susanna jumped in the shower to wash off the dust and dirt from her day around town before Mike was scheduled to pick her up. She dressed in a red sweater and her nicest jeans after debating over her closet's contents. She brushed on some makeup and blew her hair dry hoping she looked presentable. This was her first date in two years and it was with her old crush whom she hadn't seen in seven years. Tonight certainly would be interesting.
The doorbell rang, and Susanna tried to keep a straight face as she answered. Instead of Mike though, Susanna was looking into the face of a stooped elderly woman she had never seen before.
"Good evening, ma'am. How can I help you?" Susanna greeted the woman warmly.
"Hello, dear. Are you Susanna Clanford? I was told she lived here." The woman spoke in a soft gentle voice as she looked up at Susanna.
"Yes, I'm Susanna Clanford. Why may I ask are you looking for me?"
