Susanna sat back and thought about Meredith's words. It was true. Meredith hadn't really given up, but she certainly hadn't tried. Maybe all Susanna had to do was try; maybe she could solve this puzzle. After all, with the holidays, she had a few days off of work that she could commit to the jewel. The more she thought, the more assured Susanna was that she would accomplish whatever was necessary for the stone.
“You’re right, Meredith. I can do this. And I will. I don’t know what it’s going to take, but I want to do something more with my life than sit in a cubical all day doing pointless work for lousy pay. Maybe this will change the world, but maybe it’ll change things for me too.” Smiles began to light up both women’s faces.
“Good choice, my dear. Now thank you for putting up with this old broad for so long, but my Henry is going to start wondering if I died while doing some Christmas shopping. I’d best be going,” Meredith laughed as she pulled herself up off the couch. Susanna stood up with her and walked her to the door of the small apartment.
“Thank you, Meredith, for stopping by and helping me out. I’ll be sure to let you know what happens with everything.” Susanna leaned down to give the lady a quick hug and shut the door behind her new friend.
It was just after eight o’ clock when Meredith left and suddenly, Susanna realized how hungry she was. Then she remembered that she could have been with Mike that evening enjoying a date and a time of catching up with an old friend. She quickly strode over to the kitchen and pulled the phone off the hook. Dialing Mike’s number, she walked down the short hallway to the bathroom to check her hair in its large mirror. He answered on the first ring.
“Hello?”
“Hey Mike. It’s Susanna.”
“Oh hi there. I thought you had something come up tonight? Is everything alright?”
Susanna sighed, “Yeah its fine. Just a rough evening. I felt bad about cancelling our dinner so I thought I’d call and see if you have any plans for dessert tonight? If you’re still up for it, that is.”
She heard Mike smile as he replied, “Dessert sounds great, Suze. I’ll come pick you up in say, fifteen minutes? I know just the place to take you!”
“Awesome. I’ll see you in a few, Mike.”
“Bye, Susanna.”
She heard a click as Mike hung up. Looking in the mirror one last time, Susanna clicked off the light and ran to get a coat so she could be ready for her date. Maybe the night wouldn’t be so bad after all.

So reader? Is this story getting any better now? I bet you weren’t expecting little old Meredith to be the Susanna of the past. And then there’s the fact that Susanna, after being so excited to figure out the riddle of the gem, immediately called Mike to go out instead of working on her new puzzle. Do you think Susanna is even dedicated to the stone? If I didn’t know the story – well I suppose I shouldn’t say any more. Keep reading, because things are about to get interesting.
