After school I sat at the rusty red tables waiting for my mother to come get me
I looked up at the cloudy blue spotted sky, all shady hues of yellow and gray
Against the brightness were a dozen black birds, wheeling and wheeling in the air
The vultures circled; I looked around for their prey. What animal could be dead so close to a school? How large it must be to attract so many!
Then I looked up again and realized the birds were above me- going around and around with me in the middle
I was the dead animal; I was their prey. I accepted it and died.
