The new rental car sits sleek and silent in our driveway; it is a red beast ready to pounce. As we drive and drive our car is lost in a sky so wide and blue it is larger than an ocean. The aged, burning light of the sun is swallowed suddenly and the sky so clear a moment ago is now engulfed in a blanket of darkness. Silence settles with it and is a comfortable presence around the car. As we drive deeper and deeper into the night, tall electric windmills break on the horizen, their existence only made known by the blinking red lights affixed to their tops. They wink every five seconds, and look all the world like a group of flickering ruby stars. It was a beautiful ugliness that invaded the flat and simple plains. Then we drove by them and it was like travelling through some strange, sparse forest.
