Not that I'm trying to say that getting these people out there and trying to meet people and improve themselves should be discouraged, just...They shouldn't be learning how to do it from self-help books. Not that they'll learn too much from most of the books.

In the pursuit of happiness, it's easy to reach for trite answers. So that's what they've done.
"do kind things for others" - these are just things people do day-to-day, as part of being a perfectly normal human being; they don't even say how to do these things, just to go and do them. Oh brilliant work. What's next, "try to feel a bit happier"?
"find three good things each day" - Oh...Looks like I was right. Oh well, at least it's not like they're encouraging people to leech off of the peoples' happiness.
"ask others about things that have gone well" - You're kidding, right? Is every single one of my hypothetical jokes on here? Just tell people to try, but not too hard, because they're just going to fuck it up.
"be positive but stay realistic" - ...Ironically, writing this book about self-help has depressed me. I...I just can't continue on with this shit.
So there's plenty of people out there giving out (mostly cliche) advice, but what if none of these actually helps? What do they suggest? Anti-depressants. I'm joking - those would work.
