30年位前、無期懲役になっても模範的に過ごせば5年で出られる、という元服役者の話がメディアに流布していた。 当時はリテラシーがなかったものだから、文字文化は素直に信じていた。だから、死刑を廃止して無期にしようという人々の主張がどうも良く判らなかった。おそらく、犯罪者を美化崇拝し、社会転覆を目論む反社会分子の類だろうと思っていた。 元服役者の話が全体の姿なのか極一部のことなのか判らないが、少なくとも90年代からは概ね25年から30年くらいになっているのだそうだ。20歳で入れば50歳で出られるのでまだ暴れようがあるが、50歳で入ったら大概はそこが終の住処になろうことはある程度予想が付く。 無期懲役が事実上終身刑化しているわけだが、「勿論いつかは出られますよ～」と人参を頭の先へ下げておいて死ぬまで走らせてその滑稽な様をほくそ笑むというのも、死刑でスッパリ終わりにするよりも、中々人道的で日本的な刑の在り処といえるのかもしれない。 read more
