It was when the drag queen slipped that the drugs kicked in. I caught her tumble from the corner of my eye; when I turned towards her, I could feel the unmistakable beginnings of the rush that would carry me through the rest of the evening.
She wasn't too far from me when it happened; while taking in the scene, I had somehow found myself near the front of the stage. I reached out my hand and helped her to steady herself - a task made especially troublesome by her ridiculously-high heels and even-more-ridiculously tight miniskirt. She gave me a quick thanks, then got back to lip-synching "Groove Is In The Heart". I nodded, and turned my attention to finding Haley and her friends.
I was as far outside my comfort zone as could be. My goal at the beginning of the night was to drive around town aimlessly for an hour, listening to music in order to clear my head of a week's worth of bullshit - work bullshit, relationship bullshit, and so on. Not wanting to deal with the inevitable Saturday crowds at any of my usual hangouts, I didn't plan on stopping anywhere until I got home, at which point I would probably watch some TV for an hour or so and call it a night.
But I drove past one of the bars I frequent and it didn't appear to be too crowded. One drink - an early nightcap - and I would head back home.
An hour later, I was in the crush of a crowd at a gay club's drag show. An ecstasy tab was coursing its way through my system. Prior to entering, me and Haley made out for several minutes in my car. All of these were firsts for me; my aimless evening had pleasantly turned into something much, much different. That week's worth of bullshit was now the furthest thing on my mind.
