"Where are we going, anyway?" I threw myself into his shoulder as I toppled about. "I'm getting hungry."
"Conciously, we're not going anywhere." The Viper pushed me onto a pipe where I could sit. "Only a handful are actually trying to go somewhere. Most of them are just trying to get away. But!"
"But." Just to show I was still listening.
"It take a lot of time and effort to avoid paths." He said, with a glint in his eyes. "So often they will take common paths and find themselves in familiar places."
"Unintentionally?" I sat back to think that over. It made sense. People stuck to what was familiar. By the time I caught my breath and could feel my legs again, he was off. I wasn't sure how long I could keep running after him. He began scrambling down another fire escape.
I followed him, watched him leap off the second to bottom stairs, dash around a corner where I could still see him, and then lay flat against the wall. His face changed.
"Why are you making me do this?!" I demanded. I had finally made my way to the bottom and dropped off the ladder. I skidded to where he was. "Hm? What's the point of this?"
"Hush." I decided to listen to him. I found myself focusing on the other sounds of the city. There was the subway below and the arguing couple above. There were birds in threes and the wind curled around the buildings. One dog was barking, but not too often since there weren't any barks in return. I could hear myself breathing, but I could not hear his. My legs hurt, an the perching on the edge of suspense (Con't.)
